Bringing It All Together

Updated: Dec 16, 2023

AI Generated Art of Death in Cyberpunk Style

To pull all of this together I would want to use an elements from all these concepts such as making a stylised interactive art piece that involves some style of environmental storytelling, fantasy characters/settings and maybe the use of robots or AI within the narrative of the piece.

Using all this research and different concepts has allowed me to formulate knowledge on types of storytelling and immersive technology that I could use as well as ones that I personally would not want to use.

Other ideas for a project that I could do using the immersive concepts that I have looked into:

  • Shot animated or art interactive immersive piece where the audience gets to pick what happens similar to Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (Netflix, 2018) but shorter.

  • A short VR animated piece that involves an interactive storyline.

  • A stylised short videogame that relies on environmental storytelling to incite an emotional response from the player.

The concept for a story that I want to eventually do would be to demonstrate my own ideation of the afterlife, death and grief. In order to immerse an audience using emotions as well as using immersive interactive methods to do so similar to narratives such as Cemetery Boys, What Remains of Edith Finch and Spiritfarer, all which explore and portray very different versions of a natural part of the cycle of life.

During this time of research and discovering these different ways of creating, designing and making the audience be engaged, I found many aspects that people have used often when engaging the audience. These would involve making the audience feel something towards the narrative or characters, visually designing the environments could allow engagement through environmental storytelling and style is often highly important as well.

I want to find a way to tie all these striking elements together and form a project that provokes an audience to feel particular emotions as well as using stylised art/animation or video game narratives to incorporate these with environmental storytelling. I will have to figure out how exactly I want the audience to be immersed or interact with this project as well as what the overall storyline would be. Until then it was beneficial to see the strengths and downfalls of different forms and techniques of immersive storytelling.

To finish up this research blog and officially summarise, when starting this blog I did not have a particular direction I wanted to go down and decided to go down my strengths; in which being art due to having studied it before. This allowed me to start with the concept of bringing art to life into particular techniques of animation or video games that moved me onto themes within these narratives such as AI and Portals into finding a specific specialised subject that being immersion using death and the afterlife. Even though I could have researched more specific techniques, the case studies, concepts and themes that I did look into would form into a pretty effective way of immersing and engaging one's audience. I wonder what the future of these technologies and methods could lead to and how I can make some immersive product to captivate the people around me.
